Bergkapel
The Bergkapel in the Kuurnestraat in Lendelede in the Belgian province of West Flanders is a chapel dedicated to O.L.Vrouw van de Zeven Smarten. It is located on the Lendeleed hill ridge at an altitude of 42.5 meters, which was the highest point of Lendelede until the next Stevanstorm became the highest point. The chapel has views of the Leie and Scheldt valley and on clear days also on the Kluisberg. The structure stands between sheep grazing meadows and forests.
History: According to legend, the chapel was built in about 1650 on the site where lumberjacks in a tree trunk found a marble Our Lady statue. They brought it to the church but found it again in the next day at the site in the tree trunk. The place became a popular pilgrimage site with chapel. Our dear wife was worshipped for fevers, and the chapel was referred to as "fever chapel." The marble statue would still be in the Lendeleed monastery of the Sisters of Saint Vincent in Heulsestraat. In 1885, the chapel had fallen heavily and was demolished and rebuilt by an anonymous benefactor. The used stones came from the Izegemian stone bakery Vandeputte...
