City gate
Bovenpoort
De Bovenpoort is a city gate on the Bovenrij in the Belgian Herentals. She dates from 1361. The façade is covered with Gobertangesteen. Inside, a lot of ironstone from the region has been used. The ridge height of the upper gate is 10.60 meters and the opening is 4.7 meters high. Like the Sand Gate, the Upper Gate was part of the wall of the city. The gate has been demolished and rebuilt several times. The aldermen decided in 1754 because of a break in money and the poor state to break down a large part of the gate. The gates were no longer military. In 1772, the gate was restored, which determined the current view of the gate. The two copper vases on the roof were then mounted. The most recent restoration dates back to 2006. The Upper Gate is a protected monument.
