About

The Calvary Chapel is a chapel in the Flemish-Brabant town of Londerzeel, located on the Bergkapelstraat 57.

History: Pastor Mathijs van Steenbeck would have measured the Crossroad in the Holy Land to build it, on his return, in Londerzeel over the same distance with a chapel for each post. At the end of the walk was the Calvary Chapel in which the 10th to 14th Station were depicted. The chapels were built in the 1st quarter of the 16th century. Many barracks have disappeared but the Calvary Chapel has remained.

Building: It is a rectangular structure with three-sided closed choir, built in brick with sandstone layers of bacon. The top facade has an open turret. An outbuilding is placed against the chapel. The basement of the chapel is decorated as Holy Grave (14th Station). Up there is the chapel room. The interior is covered by a pressed tongue vault. The chapel contains Baroque-style sculptures and made by rural artists in the 17th and 18th centuries, including Our Lady of Smarts, Saint Helena, the Wealth of Christ and Calvary.
