About

The Allier chapel is a chapel in the town of Emblem, located on the Liersesteenweg 127.

History: Allier means Altlier (Old-Lier) and was mentioned as such in 1186. Perhaps Altlier was once an independent parish until it became dependent on the parish of Broechem before 1186. The chapel was originally dedicated to Saint-Maarten, later to Saint-Eligius and Saint-Cornelius and finally to Our Lady of Five Fountains. The chapel was destroyed in 1360 and also in 1584 by the forces of Parma. In 1615-1618 the chapel was rebuilt, as far as the choir and the transept were concerned. In 1719 the chapel was enlarged using the foundations of the original chapel. In 1848 a sacristy was built.

Building: It is a oriented one-beech brick cross church with flat closed choir, equipped with a roof rider above the entrance.

Interior: The interior is covered by a tongue vault. The chapel has an 18th century crucifix in painted wood. The portion caltar in marbled wood is from 1719. The pulpit is from 1664 and was transferred from the Our Lady Church in 1774...
