Heilig Hartkerk
The Sacred Heart Church is the parish church of the hamlet of Durmen in the eastern Flemish municipality of Zele. The church is located on the eponymous street Durmen.
History: In 1888 a church was built here in neo-Gothic style, after design by Jan Haché, while Durmen was elevated to an independent parish in 1896. The church was demolished in 1975 and in the same year a new church was built, which was inaugurated in 1976. In 2006, a tower clock and a small carillon were added.
Building: It is a low brick hall church in the style of post-war modernism. The church has a half built brick bell tower. In the interior some objects from the old church have been reused, such as the stained glass windows made by Joseph Osterrath in 1908-1909. The altar of 1900 and the first stone of the old church from 1888 were also used in the new church.
