About

The Holy Cross Chapel is a chapel in the town of Neerwinden, in the municipality of Landen, in Flanders.

Already in the 14th century a chapel in this place was mentioned. The foundation was inspired by a wooden crucifix. It was a location where battles took place at both the Battle of Neerwinden of 1693 and the Battle of Neerwinden of 1793. Frederick Jozias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, commander of the Allies, led his army from this place in 1793. The current chapel is made of brick with sandstone decorative elements. It was rebuilt in 1899 but has a facade stone with the year 1780. The chapel also carries an inscription with the text: O Crux, Ave, Spes Unica (Hail on the cross, our only hope). The chapel has a clock facade. It stands at an altitude, surrounded by three large trees, and is surrounded by an association with fourteen pillar chapels.
