Baggaertshof
The Baggaertshof is located in the old town (in the Overbeke district) of the Belgian city of Kortrijk. It dates from the first half of the seventeenth century and is a whole of medieval houses, a chapel and a medicinal herb garden. The whole is now a protected monument and is also called 'the second beguijnhof of Kortrijk'.
History: The Baggaertshof was founded in 1638 by Josijne Baggaert who set up 13 houses for needy women. She was the daughter of a wealthy Kortrijk weaver merchant and ships of the city, Willem Baggaert and his wife, Mayken van Welsenaers. These houses are arranged together with the chapel around a rectangular courtyard. Initially it was called Bagaertshof 't Olmeke or the Saint Joseph houses. Inside is a chapel in which there is a miraculous O.L.V. statue, originating from the chapel Ten Olme. A painting in the chapel reminds of the miracle. It was used against nerve diseases, seizures, fever and other camel. There is also a pump, a toilet and thirteen houses, which were inhabited until about 1970.
