Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery is a British military cemetery located in the Belgian city of Poperinge. The cemetery is located on the Dean De Bolaan at 570 m southeast of the Grote Markt. It has an L-shaped ground plan with an area of 1,851 m2 and is surrounded by a brick wall. The cemetery was designed by Reginald Blomfield and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. From the street and the entrance gate one walks via a path of about 16 m to the actual entrance where there is also the Stone of Remembrance. The Cross of Sacrifice is central to the site. 453 deaths are commemorated, including 24 that could no longer be identified.
History: Poperinge was an important centre for British and French troops because of its size and location. Although the city was close to Ypres and the front was still relatively safe. It was a place with good logistics infrastructure where many social and military activities took place. There were also field hospitals where the numerous victims from the various battles were nursed to Ypres...
