About

The Avernassetomb or the Tom van Montenaken or Tumulus de Cortis is a Gallo-Roman tumulus (tomme or tomb hill) south of Montenaken, in the Belgian-Limburg municipality of Gingelom. The tumulus is part of a group of 6 tombs within a radius of 1.5 kilometres around Montenaken and dates from the second century AD. The tomb is located on the Tommeveld in a field directly north of the motorway E40 between Liège and Brussels. The Avernassetomb has a diameter of 23 meters and a height of 7.8 meters. The Avernassetom receives as well as some other tumuli attention as an ecological treasury. Because the soil of the tumuli was never fertilized or processed, seeds of rare plants are still present. Due to the removal of the feral bushes that had taken the tumuli, they are again recognizable as artificial hills and rare field flowers are found as small beavernel and hawkwort. In 1979 the Avernassetomb was protected as a monument.
