The Saint John Hospital was once the most important medieval urban institution for the sick, poor and needy in the city of Bruges. Since 1977, the medieval hospitals have been set up as museums. That museum tells the story of the building, the sick and soul care and the monastery community on the basis of utensils and works of art, primarily the works of Hans Memling. The Sint-Janssite still says:
The medieval hospital building and church (now Museum Sint-Janshospital). The former convent of the sisters (now office building). The former monastery of the brothers, which later became the pharmacy (now museum). The hospital built in the nineteenth century by Isidoor Allewieldt (now Congress Centre Old-Sint-Jan and Restaurants). The complex is known as the Old Saint John Hospital or Old Saint John. Mariastraat 38, four houses (16th-17th century, now archaeological museum and reserves). The nose-throat-ear clinic (dating from the 1930s, now restoration workshops and reserves). The eye clinic (dating from the 1930s, now restoration studios and reserves). The former materiality in the Oostmeers (dating from 1907, now office building).
