Boodschap van de Moeder Godskerk
The Mother of God's Church is a former Greek Orthodox church in Antwerp built around 1900. Since 1902 worship services have been organised on a regular basis. The church was located in the Jan van Gentstraat 5.
History of the Greek Orthodox community in Antwerp: The presence of the Greek Orthodox community in Antwerp dates back to the 17th century. In 1900, the community decided to purchase its own church building on the initiative of the then vice-consul of Greece C. Nikolaïdis. On 1 August 1988 the Greek Orthodox parish of Mary Message was officially recognized by the Belgian government. In 2007, the community had 752 believers in the city of Antwerp. In 2007 the church was demolished to make way for new construction. The Greek Orthodox Parish of the Message to the Mother of God now holds services in the building at Jan of Gentstraat 11.
