Arboretum Wespelaar is a 20 ha arboretum in Wespelaar in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It is an extension of the Domain Recognized Red, which lies just south of it. Since 2011, the arboretum is open to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1 April to 15 November.
History: The extensive collection was brought together by Philippe de Spoelberch. The first plantings in the arboretum date from 1985. During trips and expeditions to all directions, a lot of wild plant material was collected. The tree garden could thus become a world-class plant collection. The Arboretum Wespelaar Foundation became the owner of it in 2007 and provides further expansion, maintenance and opening.
Collection: The collection has about 2200 different species and varieties. A number of these are on the International Red List of Endangered Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCNR). By giving vulnerable and endangered plants extra attention in the collection, the arboretum wants to contribute to its preservation. In the plant collection there are a few genders that are special...
