Stadsmuseum 't Schippershof
The Schippershof in the Belgian city of Menen was originally a relief. The building has been protected as a monument since 1991. In 1998 the city museum of Menen was established.
History: The building is located in the city centre and dates back to the 17th century. Originally it was on the old Leie Bridge, near the old fortresses. The Leie is now about 300 metres away. It is one of the last witnesses to the origin of the city. In the early 20th century, the Schippershof was a busy tension at the intersection of the Leie and Bruges-Rijsel. Architecturally, the painted façade and the glass and frame are valuable. The side of the house was in the Leie. In that side still sticks an old cannonball. A few shooting holes clearly refer to the building's strategic implantation. In the early 20th century, the Schippershof was home to the sculptor Georges Dobbels, who lived there for the first 20 years of his life. The house was then an inn where one could eat and sleep and which remained open twenty-four hours a day. Many docked skippers stayed there. It was one of the first homes with a phone in Menen.
