Carillons and Tower Movements Michiels (also known as House Michiels) is a historic studio for tower movements and carillons, located in Mechelen.
History: The history of the family business dates back to 1860 when the brothers Edward and Louis Michiels invented a way to synchronise with the mother clock using electricity tower clocks. This resulted in the invention of the machine a revolutionary system for that time. The system is still in use in the St.Rombouts Tower. The invention was the beginning of the success for the later tower clockry. In 1890 Edward Michels, who was also skilled in clock casting, bought the mansion De Clippel (also known as House Empress) at the corn market in Mechelen and converted the coach house into his studio. In 1914, during the First World War, the studio was destroyed and replaced with the original installations of the tower clock factory.
