The Kongolo memorial chapel, located in Genntinnes (municipality of Chastre), in Walloon Brabant (Belgium), was founded in 1967 in memory of the missionaries and missionaries (Catholic and Protestant) who died during the Simba rebellion (1962-1964) following the independence of Congo. The building is modern in style and contains 217 names on the façade.
The event: the massacre in Congo: At the end of December 1961, Congolese national army soldiers recaptured the city of Congo on the Katangese gendarmes. The spiritual missionaries in charge of the city's small seminary were arrested on December 31 and 19 of them were executed on New Year's Day because they were suspected of supporting Moise Tshombe and Katanga's independence. The massacre caused great emotions in Belgium (where most spirituals came from). On 25 January 1962, a national funeral was held in Saint Michael's and Goedelekathedal in the presence of Prince Albert and other high authorities of the country.
