About

The Armand Steurssquare (French: Square Armand Steurs) is a municipality located in the Belgian municipality of Sint-Joost-ten-Node. The square is a tribute to the former mayor of Sint-Joost-ten-Node Armand Steurs for his commitment to the water supply of a number of Brussels municipalities. The garden was designed by architect Eugène Dhuicque according to an asymmetric design and was inaugurated on 3 July 1932.

Typical of the interbellum is the integration of the plant garden into the rest of the urban fabric. The square was built at the end of the Paul Descharellaan on the roof of the Brussels-Luxembourg railway line. The slope of this roof and the terrain is clearly visible in the relief of the square.

There are sculptures of famous artists in various places in the garden, including the monument The stonemasons of Guillaume Charlier and the sculpture group The source of Julian Dillens, which stands in front of the semicircular pillar gallery. Here a so-called centenary tree was planted on the occasion of the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Belgian independence. The square is a protected monument since 1993.
