Maria Hemelvaartkerk
The Maria Ascension Church in the Belgian town of Winksele has square pillars and a sandstone tower. The Romanesque beech was built simultaneously with the tower in the 12th century. The fortified western tower is typical of the parish churches of the princely diocese of Liège. In the middle of the 13th century they built a porch with a circular arch door. In the 13th century, Winksele became an important place of pilgrimage where possessed people came. The church was recognized as a protected monument in 1938 and was restored in 1966-1968. The latest outdoor restoration began in April 2017. In 2026 the interior restoration was started.
