The mountain chapel (Bergkapelle) is a chapel (actually a church) in the lower town of the Belgian city of Eupen, located on the Bergkapellstraße.
History: The lower town (Unterstadt) had a rural character. Because the church of Saint Nicholas in the upper town was difficult to reach, chapels were built in the lower city (Bergviertel and Haasviertel) where Mass could be ordered. In the 15th century there was already a small chapel in the Bergviertel, and in 1692 the construction of a chapel in the Haasviertel, which was not completed. In 1712 a new one was built on the site of the old Mountain Chapel. In 1729 it was enlarged with one bay. The chapel was dedicated to John the Baptist. In 1797 the French banned the practice of religion in this chapel, but in 1803 it became an auxiliary church. The chapel was expanded and in 1812 she received a tongue vault. In 1850 an organ from Roetgen was installed and between 1867 and 1882 a major renovation took place in neo-Roman style. In 1885, a crucifixion group was placed on the outside against the choir.
