About

The Deuster Chapel is a chapel located southeast of the Belgian city of Peer.

History: The name of the chapel comes from Oesterveld, a field located east of Peer, which was already mentioned in documents in 1478. The chapel was founded in 1660 or 1687 and was dedicated to Our Lady of Always Help, and later to Our Lady of Rest. The year 1687 would point to the foundation by Petrus Moors (1660-1703), who allegedly had placed a statue of Mary in a lime tree in the chapel. Nevertheless, the year 1660 would be carved into a stone, but this stone was lost in a later renovation. In 1717 the chapel was extended to the west, possibly by Jan Moors (1647-1720), the elder brother of Peter. From 1700 to 1820, a hermit lived in a safe that was fixed to the chapel. He was responsible for the maintenance of the chapel, assisted the priests when they came to read Mass, and taught the children. In 1735 the chapel came to the parish of Peer. In 1799 the equestrian and cross were removed by the French, and the chapel was removed. About...
