Begraafplaats van Dendermonde
The Cemetery of Dendermonde is a municipal cemetery in the Belgian city of Dendermonde. The cemetery is located on the Kerkhofweg, close to the border with Apples almost 2 km west of the city centre (Grote Markt).
History: The original central part of the cemetery was designed by architect Edouard Bouwens. It has a rectangular ground plan, divided into four sectors with a central Calvary and is enclosed by a wall. A monumental gate building with a double metal gate, flanked by two metal gates in brick pillars forms the entrance. Later the cemetery was extended in a southern and eastern direction.
Funerary heritage: Several parts of the cemetery are included in the list of protected heritage for their high funeral heritage value. Various stone barbers such as Clement Jonckheer and Ernest Salu cut off beautiful monuments from natural stone. There are 2024 different old types kept: excavations, a tomb chapel and the gateway and others have been recognized as monuments since 2003. The cemetery has been recognized as a Architectural Heritage since 2010.
