About

The Saint Hartkerk is a church building in the Kolegem district of the municipality of Mariakerke in Ghent. The church is dedicated to the Holy Heart of Jesus Christ.

History: The church was built in 1936 according to the plans of architect Lucien Maes. She was initiated by Bishop Coppieters. It was not so easy for Kolegemnaars to attend a mass in Mariakerke village, across the Bruges Vaart. Only in 1936 this auxiliary church was inaugurated in the Eeklostraat, as a church for the Our Lady parish of birth, as Kolegem was separated from it by the Bruges Vaart. In 1962 the Sacred Heart Church was elevated to a parish church. In 2015 it became known that in Ghent sixteen churches were placed on a list by the diocese of Ghent that would be closed for worship. This church was also one of them. This encountered resistance from both the church community and politicians of CD&V.
