Heilig Hartkerk
Since 2024, Hartetrief has been the name of the church building of the former Sacred Heart Church on the Saint Hartplein in the Ghent district of Sint-Amandsberg, after it was converted into a neighborhood meeting place with multivalent space, social restaurant and neighborhood kitchen. The church was dedicated to the Holy Heart worship.
Architecture and construction history: The Sacred Heart parish was recognized in 1877. There was a wooden emergency church that was replaced by the present church, whose construction started in 1881. The building was finished in 1883 and was inaugurated the same year. The heavy square church tower on the west side came in 1910. It is a three-storey basilical church of five bays, a transept of two bays, choir with apse and two absidiols, with baptism built on the north side. The style is neo-gothic and looks strict.
Redestination: And Route is a city renewal project for the district Dampoort and Sint-Amandsberg in which a new destination for the church and Saint Hartplein is sought in 2018.
