About

The Augustine Church is a former monastery church in the West Flemish town of Roeselare, located on the Zuidstraat 25 on the campus of the Klein Seminarie Roeselare.

History: The church was built from 1725-1749. From 1867-1871 innovations were made in the interior. During World War I, the Germans used the church as a field hospital, violating the tombstones of the Augustines, which were found in the crypt. In 1918, the church burned, with only the walls and the vault standing. From 1925-1930 the interior was refurbished.

Building: It is a one beechly oriented church in Baroque style. The facade carries the year 1725. In 1749 the coat of arms of Johann-Wilhelm van Neuburg, Lord of Wijnendale, was placed. Underneath the choir is a crypt with tombstones of Augustine. From the church inventory can be mentioned: an anonymous painting, representing The evangelists and possibly from a disassembled 18th-century altar in 1867. There is also a pulpit of 1780. The other church furniture is from after 1918. Next to an 18th-century stained glass window, there are some stained glass windows of 1927-1928.
