About

The Borluutsteen is a well preserved medieval house on the north side of the Korenmarkt in Ghent. It was built in about 1175 of blue-grey limestone from Tournai.

The building has four bays and five layers. The ground plan is trapezoidal, with a northern side of 22 meters, a southern side of 20 meters and a width of 9.5 meters. The house is characterized by a staircase facade and horizontal running waterlists between the floors. In the wall is the coat of arms of the Borluut family. This has a blue background and in the foreground are three walking deer. On the ground floor are bends, while on the upper floors the wall openings are straight.

Name: The name was supposed to come from the owners 'Borluut. According to writer Frans De Potter, this family would have lived here with several generations, but there is no complete certainty.

Restoration: In the 19th century the medieval facades were neglected and the original facade was replaced by a plastered frame facade. The so typical façade we see now, was in 1933 by architect Frans...
