Church building
Christus Koningkerk
The Christ King Church is a Catholic church in the Belgian city of Sint-Niklaas, located on the Heistraat. The church from the 1930s was built in the style of the new commerciality.
Architecture: The church was designed by the Brussels architect Raphaël Verwilghen and was inaugurated in 1938. It is a three-storey, modernist parish church that is lined on the outside with quartz concrete plates. The freestanding, square bell tower has a height of 50 meters and is only connected to its base with a bridge to the church building. In the sober and symmetrically designed interior there is sculpture by Werner Heyndrickx and Robert Van de Velde. The glass windows are from Staff Pyl and Sander Wijnants. The church became a protected monument in 2002 because of its architectural value. It is the only church in Flanders that was built entirely in concrete during the interbellum.
