About

The chapel is a chapel in the municipality of Dendermonde, which belongs to the east-flemish municipality of Baasrode.

Chapel

History: A legend tells that Our Lady of Smarts appeared in 1713 to a passerby, on which he attached a wooden chapel to a tree. A final chapel came here in 1721-1722, but in 1757 it was replaced by a larger chapel known as Broeck Cauter Cappel. Around 1860 the chapel was demolished and replaced by a new one, but a facade stone with the year 1757 was preserved. In 1757 the Brotherhood of the Emergency of God was also founded. The chapel, originally dedicated to Our Lady of Smarts, is later dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

Chapel

Building: It is a neo-Gothic chapel on rectangular map with three-sided choir closure. Above the facade is a bell. The interior is covered by a tongue vault. The white painted wooden altar is in rococo style. It is probably from the chapel of 1757.
