Chapel
The Brielkapel is a chapel in the municipality of Buggenhout in eastern Flanders, located on the Brielstraat.
History: The history of the chapel would go back far, until before the Viking invasions. Then there would have been a wooden church that would have been destroyed by the Vikings in the 9th century and then destroyed and rebuilt several times. Around 1672 the chapel was last destroyed and in 1690 no chapel was mentioned at this place. The current chapel is from the early 18th century. Later on, restoration and maintenance works were carried out regularly.
Building: The chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Assistance, is located near the Scheldt, on the provincial border of East Flanders and Antwerp or, previously, the Count of Flanders and the Duchy of Brabant. The chapel, on rectangular plan, has a three-sided closed choir and a roof rider above the facade.
Interior: The chapel is covered by a cross-rib vault and has a porch-caltar from the early 18th century. Furthermore, there is a covered 17th century statue of Mary in polychromed wood, presumably from the Abbey of Affligem. Other than that...
