The Brussels gate is the last remaining city gate in Mechelen. The gate is located on the edge of the historic centre of the city where the ring road crosses with the Hoogstraat. Between 1264 and 1268 the Mechelen city wall was built.
The Brussels gate was built in the 13th century and was the highest of the Mechelen city gates. That's why they called her Commander Gate. The building is built in Tournai stone, and around 1400 raised with Balegem stone (lighter color). It belongs to the Scheldt Gothic. In the 16th century the towers were lowered and the roof structure was changed. In addition to the function of gateway, the building has since been used for other purposes. There was a police station, a meeting room and the art studio of Alfred Ost. Then it became a museum about the history of the city. It contains documents and archaeological finds. Since 2010 Het Firmament is based there, (t)House for Figurentheater in Flanders. The Brussels gate is not accessible to visitors. As in most other cities, the Mechelen city walls were demolished.
