Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintained cemetery
Adegem Canadian War Cemetery is a British military cemetery with World War II victims located in the Belgian village of Adegem, part of Maldegem. The cemetery is located in the east of the village center, along the road from Adegem to Eeklo (N9) and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. There are 1,155 deaths commemorated, including 45 unidentified. The cemetery was designed by Philip Hepworth and has a rectangular ground plan with an area of 18,145 m2. The graves are symmetrically laid out in twelve beds. The centre is the Cross of Sacrifice and at the back is a memorial room. Every year, on the second Sunday of September, a Canadian-Polish memory ceremony takes place.
History: By the end of September 1944, the Allies already had Antwerp in their hands, but the Germans still had the banks of the Scheldemonding. From October until the beginning of November, they fought to free this Scheldt Delta, especially by the 3rd Canadian Division together with the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and the 52nd Division.
