The Basilica of the Holy Blood, also called Holy Blood Basilica, is a double chapel in the city of Bruges, located on the Burg.
Basilica and chapel: Downstairs lies the Saint-Basilica chapel (1139-1149), the only fully preserved Romanesque church in West Flanders. She is dedicated to the Holy Basilica. This was the chapel of the graves of Flanders, more specifically Diederik van de Alsace, Count of Flanders (who would have brought the Holy Blood to Bruges). Between the town hall and the chapel of Saint-Basilica lies the little chapel of Saint-Ivo, which under the ancien régime was the place of worship of the Bruges scholars and of their association, called De Sabbatine.
Holy Blood Chapel: The Basilica chapel and the Ivokapel became the foundation of the Gothic chapel, the Holy Blood Chapel, where the relic of the Holy Blood is kept, which is carried around every year on Ascension Day in the Holy Blood Procession. The Holy Blood Chapel was originally Romanesque, but was renovated in the 15th century in Gothic style. During the French Revolution, the upper chapel was largely destroyed and rebuilt in 1819-1839.
