Arrows (French: Arlon; German and Luxembourgish: Arel) is a city in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. The city has more than 31,000 inhabitants (called Aarlenaars) and is therefore the smallest and most southern Belgian provincial capital. With Tongeren and Tournai, Aarlen is considered the oldest city in Belgium.
History: Even before the Roman conquest there was a Celtic settlement. The Roman town of Orolaunum was at the crossroads of roads connecting Reims, Trier and Cologne. During excavations, many objects from the Gallo-Roman period were found, of which some are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum. By the marriage of Duke Henry I of Limburg with the heir to the Earl of Aarlen, the county of Aarlen came into the possession of the Duchy of Limburg. After the death of Walram III of Limburg in 1226 Aarlen came to his youngest son, Henry V of Luxembourg. In 1830 the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg took part in the Belgian Revolution, except for Luxembourg City, where the Prussian garrison in the citadel prevented it. The county board...
