About

Najac Castle is a castle in the commune of Najac in the department of Aveyron in the Occitan region of France. The castle was built between 1253 and 1266 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Louis IX, on the bases of an ancient castrum, and on his Roman dungeon, built around 1100 by Bertrand de Saint-Gilles, son of Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse. Najac was the seat of a royal vigour.

Several of the articles of the privileges granted to Najac in December 1368 indicate that it was during the siege of the senate floor of Rouergue until 1370, when it was finally established in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. The remains of the castle and its second enclosure are classified as historical monuments by order of 3 July 1925.
