About

The Lorraine Monument or Monument to the Victory of Lorraine is a monument located above the town of Charmes in the department of Vosges, which was erected in the aftermath of the First World War to celebrate the victory of France over its Lorrain lands during the battle of the hole of Charmes.

Location: The Lorraine monument is located at the top of the hill of the Haut du Mont, at an altitude of 385 meters. An orientation table reproducing the battlefield was installed nearby. It is for the IGN a geodetic site of the French retail network.

History: The Lorraine monument was built at the instigation of René Georges Kimpflin, a lieutenant who took part in the battle, supported by Marshal Hubert Lyautey, the writer Maurice Barrès, General Édouard de Castelnau, the MP for Nancy and Minister Louis Marin, the MP and then Senator Vosgien Maurice Flayelle. It is the work of architect Léon Cayotte whose project was selected among the three presented. The first stone was laid on 23 August 1925 by General de Castelnau, and the monument was inaugurated on the basis of a subscription made in 1923 and 1924.
