The bird estate is a public space of about 100 hectares designed to accommodate wild birds and allow them to be observed by the public. This bird park is located in the north-east of the Ariège department in France, mainly in the municipality of Mazères.
Location and history: Started in 1999, the construction of the A66 L'Ariegeoise motorway required the clearing of 5.65 million m3 of debris and 5.33 million m3 of embankment and land to remove granulate. The municipality of Mazères has responded favourably to this request for extraction on condition that the land to the northwest of the communal territory is returned immediately after construction, in particular the three bodies of water obtained by extraction of the aggregates, located on the left bank of the Hers-vif. The basic elements of the Bird Estate were thus constituted. Through the resurgence of the water table and the immediate proximity of the Hers-vif, the gravies became four lakes connected to each other by a network of ditches, themselves fed by the streams of Cazeret and Raunier.
