About

Via Aquitania or Via Aquitana is a Roman road probably built from 14 AD, the year of the death of the Roman emperor Augustus, linking Narbonne, capital of the province of Gaule Narbonnaise, to Toulouse (also in Narbonnaise) and Bordeaux in the province of Gaule Aquitaine, of which it became the capital in the second century. This route, built on Gallic roads drawn from the 2nd century BC, is an emerging axis for the development of the Italian wine trade. This Roman road is remarkable for its solid foundations between Narbonne and Toulouse, which is due to the absence of a waterway between these two cities to transport goods.

Via Aquitania

This explains the large number of remains on this part of Via Aquitania. Between Toulouse and Bordeaux, however, many sections were constructed in a less solid way, since the Garonne was usable for the transport of goods.
