About

The shelter of Pié Lombard, or shelter of Pié-Lombard, is a prehistoric site located in the communal territory of Tourrettes-sur-Loup, in the hinterland of Nice, in the department of Alpes-Maritimes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The rock shelter was occupied during the Middle Paleolithic and Upper Paleolithic Epipaleolithic periods. The cavity of Pié Lombard was discovered in 1962 by Armand Mellira, a local amateur archaeologist. Excavations at the prehistoric site resulted in the release of typical musternal lithic material with a high proportion of scrapers, lithic material with facies likely attributable to, or comparable to, Epigravetian, in smaller amounts and with high degradation and erosion, two incives of a Neandertalian child and wildlife remnants — mainly remains of bouquetins, lagomorphs, Arvicola, deer, canids, ursids and felids.
