The monument to the dead of Bathelémont-lès-Bauzemont in 1918 is dedicated to the first three American soldiers of the First World War who died for France on November 3, 1917. The victims, Corporal James Bethel Gresham (en), Private Thomas Francis Enright (en) and Private Merle David Hay (en) belonged to the 1st Infantry Division of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe under General John J. Pershing; Killed in battle against the Germans, they were buried in Bathelémont.
Inaugurated on November 3, 1918, the monument was destroyed in October 1940 by the German occupier. It was replaced in 1955 by an uncarved granite stele.
