château de Commarque
The castle of Commarque located on the town of Eyzies in the Dordogne department, is a castle built around the twelfth century at the request of the abbots of Sarlat, it is owned by the family of Beynac until the seventeenth century. The castral site contained within a enclosure the dungeon, which was the seigneurial home of the Beynac, a chapel and towers inhabited by other noble families. Abandoned in the 18th century, it then fell into ruins.
Purchased in 1968 by Hubert de Commarque, it has since been the subject of several restoration campaigns. Under the castle, at the edge of the dungeon, is the archaeological site of the prehistoric cave adorned with Commarque.
