The six Napoleon shelters are mountain refuges located by the way or near passes in the Hautes-Alpes department. Their construction was ordered by Emperor Napoleon I in thanks to the people of Gabon and the High-Alpine on his return from the island of Elbe. They were built under Napoleon III in the mid-19th century.
