Saint-Bénigne Cathedral in Dijon is a 13th-century Gothic-style Catholic religious building located in the preserved centre of Dijon, Côte-d'Or. The cathedral is dedicated to Bénigne de Dijon, Christian martyr of the second century and Catholic saint. First abbey of Saint-Bénigne de Dijon, the building became late cathedral in 1792, succeeding Saint-Étienne de Dijon Church, which for a few years housed the bishopric after the creation of the Diocese of Dijon in 1731. The crypt has been classified as historical monuments since 1846, and the cathedral itself since 1862.
In 511, during the reign of the Merovingian king Clovis I, the bishop Saint Gregory of Langres built a crypt to place there the sarcophagus of Saint Bénigne de Dijon (Christian martyr of the 2nd century). A basilica dedicated to Saint Bénigne in 535, is built on the crypt. In 871, the bishop of Langres Isaac founded the abbey of Saint-Bénigne de Dijon governed by the rule of Saint Benedict, with the basilica of Saint-Bénigne de Dijon as its abbey.
