Hattonchâtel Castle is a building located in Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel, in the former French commune of Hattonchâtel, in the department of Meuse in the Grand Est region.
History: The site was built in 860 by Hatton, bishop of Verdun, whose name it bears, on a rocky promontory overlooking the Woëvre plateau. The establishment became the principal fief of the bishops and the location of their currency hotel until 1546. In 1636 the retreating Swedes besieged and burned most of the village. The site dates from the Middle Ages; It was ravaged by the fighting of 1918 and completely restored between 1923 and 1928 by the architect Henri Jacquelin, thus producing the ultimate troubadour-style castle of Lorraine, a pastiche that uses remains of the 11th century building. The work was funded by American benefactor Belle Skinner. The Louise-Cottin museum at the Castle of Hattonchâtel preserves part of the artist's works because she resided there for a time. The castle is managed like a hotel, a wedding and congress center.
