About

The bridge of Europe is a French road bridge that crosses the railway lines of the Saint-Lazare station at the Place de l'Europe in Paris. Built in 1863, it appears in many major paintings of the Impressionist era. Overlooking the Saint-Lazare station in Paris, Monet and Caillebotte depicted it, as early as 1876-77, in numerous works.

Monet, paints a dozen paintings on this subject and presents a first version at the third Impressionist exhibition. Caillebotte, fascinated by this subject, bought three variations of Monet on the theme of the station. He painted himself, on the same subject, The Bridge of Europe and On the Bridge of Europe.

No doubt this highly impressionist and modern subject also fascinated Louis Anquetin, as evidenced by pastel, executed in 1889.
