About

Montmartre is a district in the 18th arrondissement of Paris (France) dominated by the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. Since the 19th century, it has welcomed many artists such as Picasso or Modigliani and has become the symbol of a rural and autonomous life within the megapolis itself. Until 1860, Montmartre was a commune in the Seine department.

That year, under the law of extension of the capital, the commune was annexed by Paris with the exception of a small part which was allocated to the commune of Saint-Ouen. The majority of the territory of the former Montmartre is thus integrated into what becomes the 18th arrondissement of Paris, called "des Buttes-Montmartre" and made up of the administrative districts of Grandes-Carrières, Clignancourt, Goutte-d'Or and Chapelle. Like the Marais district, Montmartre today has no precise geographical limit: it is a "historic" Parisian neighbourhood, not an "administrative district", traditionally delimited to the north by Rue Custine, to the west by Rue Caulaincourt, to the south by Boulevards de Clichy and Rochechouart, and to the east by Rue de Clignancourt.
