Domaine de George Sand
George Sand's estate — often referred to as George Sand's house or Nohant Castle — is an 18th-century castle located in Nohant-Vic, about 30 kilometres from Châteauroux. The residence of the novelist George Sand (1804-1876) has been owned by the State since October 6, 1952, following the donation of the estate by Aurora Lauth-Sand, granddaughter of the writer. The castle and the whole estate with its garden, cemetery, outbuildings and two meadows, called Pre Pile and Pré des Clous, are classified as historical monuments by decree of 22 December 1952.
The six-hectare park was classified by the Ministry of Culture as a remarkable garden and the castle transformed into a museum is labeled Maisons des Illustres. The whole, open to the public, is managed by the National Monuments Centre.
