castellas de Montpeyroux
The castellas de Montpeyroux is a medieval fortress located in the commune of Montpeyroux (Herault).
History: It was founded in 1070 by a descendant of Saint Guilhem. The castle was originally conceived as a fortified aristocratic residence, but it quickly attracted the population to become a real village during the 12th century. During the hundred-year war in 1384, the castle was partially destroyed by the English. He became Protestant in the 16th century and was besieged and taken by the marshal of Joyeuse in 1567. At the end of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century, it was gradually abandoned by its population in favour of the hamlets of Barry and Adisse located below (the latter will then become the centre of the village and the present village of Montpeyroux). Long after the total desertion of the site, in the mid-19th century, the remains will experience a reoccupation by a convent whose chapel built in 1863 is dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Salette. These are the only ruins currently visible in the enclosure of the castellas, the construction of the convent having unfortunately erased the traces of the older buildings...
