Pierre de Martialis
The "stone of Martialis" is the common name given to a stele inscribed in the Gaulish language discovered by archaeologist Charles Hippolyte Maillard de Chambure in 1839 during an exploration of the Gallo-Roman remains of the site of Alésia in Alise-Sainte-Reine (Côte d'Or). It commemorates the financing and construction in Alesia of a building with a Gaulish deity — Ucuétis — by a certain Martialis, from which it derives its name. First preserved at the archaeological museum of Dijon, the stele is subsequently deposited at the archaeological museum of Alise-Sainte-Reine where it is still located. Many casts were made, some of which are now exhibited at the Musée d'Archéologie nationale in Saint-Germain-en-Laye or at the MuséoParc Alésia.
