arc de Campanus
L'arc de Campanus is an ancient monument located in the commune of Aix-les-Bains in the department of Savoie in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. In the Roman administrative geography, Aquae (Aix-les-Bains) is located in the city of Vienna, in allobrogic territory. Its dimensions, and especially its very low thickness (0.75 m), make it a particular building.
Funeral monument or monumental arch dedicated to the memory of a family of notables and acting as a door, it is built under the Roman High Empire in the 1st or 2nd century. The dedicant of this arc bears the Roman name of Lucius Pompius Campanus, and it is his cognomen who is at the origin of the usual denomination of the monument. The bow also carries fourteen cartridges of dedications to members of the Pompei family, only part of which could be decrypted with certainty.
The arch of Campanus stands in the historic centre of the modern city of Aix-les-Bains, close to the two other ancient monuments known in the city, the temple of Diane and the thermal baths.
