The Palmrain is a road bridge across the Rhine connecting France (RD 105) and Germany between Huningue and Weil am Rhein. Inaugurated on September 29, 1979, it is the road bridge located most south of Alsace. At the exit of the bridge on the French side was the Franco-German customs office of Huningue Pont. This office was inaugurated on 8 December 1981 by Jacques Campet, Director General of Customs. It was closed on 31 December 1992 when the EU borders were opened.
History: The bridge was erected in place of an old flying railway bridge opened to traffic dating from 1843 and carried away by a flood following the bombing of the Kembs locks in 1944. After the Second World War, a ferry service was put into service, and it was in the late 1960s that the municipalities of Village Neuf, Huningue and Weil am Rhein established an agreement on the construction of the Palmrain Bridge, named after the inhabitants of Baden at the former railway bridge.
