Fortress
From the 9th century, access to the two bridges linking the island of the City of Paris to the banks of the Seine was protected by two chestnuts, first made of wood, then made of stone:
The Grand Châtelet, in the north, to protect access to the Grand Pont (the current bridge to Change). The Petit Châtelet, south, to protect access to the Petit-Pont. Located at the southern end of the Petit-Pont, the small Châtelet was named to distinguish it from the large Châtelet located beyond the Grand Pont. In Paris, when the name "Châtelet" is used, without further precision, it is always the Grand Châtelet.
