Fortress
château de Roquetaillade
Roquetaillade is a fortress in the commune of Mazères in the Gironde department. The site includes two castles, the "old castle" dating from the 12th century and the "new castle" built in the 14th century. A separate chapel is located in the fortified enclosure, which would once also house a whole village.
The second fortress was built as a castle of pleasure in the 16th century and then in the 19th century. Never sold, Roquetaillade is one of the few castles in France that has always been inhabited since its origins, always by the same family. Renovated by Viollet-le-Duc, Roquetaillade is one of the thousand emblematic French buildings classified by Prosper Mérimée in 1840 on the first historical monument list.
For its safeguard, Roquetaillade was opened to the public in 1956 and has been part of the Natura 2000 Network since 2010.
